Adding climate policy to Wren’s portfolio

As of April 2022, Wren has portioned a percentage of its Climate Portfolio to support policy projects. We're pleased to announce our first partnerships:

  • 🌤 Clean Air Task Force (CATF) — Decarbonize the global energy system to address climate change.
  • 🏛 Carbon180 — Design and champion equitable, science-based policies that bring carbon removal solutions to gigaton scale.

Both of these policy groups have been recognised as being among the most high-impact, cost-effective, and evidence-based organizations.  Let’s dive into what that means, learn how they work, and talk about why Wren has chosen them for the fund.

Why is Wren choosing to fund climate policy?

To address the trillions of tons of carbon that humans have already dumped in our atmosphere, we need to make changes on a government level. Anyone can help catalyze these changes, but we must also convince the people at the source. This means working with policymakers and garnering government support to achieve net-negative emissions.

We need to push for systemic change. We need to re-imagine our economies, agriculture, infrastructure, and power grid. Every system influences our planet's climate. Climate policy needs a seat at each of these tables.

Introducing: Clean Air Task Force (CATF)

Our energy system emits more than 70% of the greenhouse gasses that cause global warming. That includes roughly 40 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year.  Unless we make drastic changes to the way we power our planet, that number will continue to rise.

For over 25 years, CATF has been advocating for a zero-emissions, high-energy planet at an affordable cost.  They promote key climate solutions by advocating for carbon-free technologies and net-zero policies. To do so, they look work with hundreds of planet experts to solve and address climate issues. Their mission is to decarbonise the global energy system to address climate change.

“Our task is to reduce climate change by applying an overwhelming amount of force to some of the biggest levers to reduce carbon and other climate-warming emissions.”

Clean Air Task Force

Wren believes in their work. Their low- and zero-emission energy policies are backed by extensive research and assessments.  Their legal team represents non-profit clients, fighting for pollution-reduction and climate-protection measures. They are problem solvers and a great resource. They point us in the direction of a better future.

Introducing: Carbon180

Both Wren and Carbon180 believe that climate change can be fixed. It's an ambitious project—it requires removing already-existing carbon from our atmosphere.  We also need unmistakable economic arguments for action for our climate mitigation policies.

Carbon180 is a newer organization, but they've already made great strides. They advocate for carbon-removal technologies and provide transparency tools for everyone.

Right now, the team is working on the Farm Bill 2023: Creating carbon sinks in our forests and soil. It's a rare opportunity to make living carbon sinks from our farms and forests. Two of their other ongoing initiatives include shaping direct air capture (DAC) hubs and recommending fair carbon removal policies.

“We've built a network of experts in science, business, and policy so that the best ideas make it from lab to legislation, ensuring carbon removal scales not just quickly, but well.”

Carbon180

2021 was a breakthrough year for Carbon180 and record-setting investments in carbon removal.  This speaks to a future in which governments include these world-saving technologies as a crucial component. Carbon180 will be on the frontlines of these discussions as they continue to campaign for climate responsibility.

You can make an impact by supporting both Carbon180 and Clean Air Task Force through your Wren subscription.

Smarter climate policy is part of the solution to the climate crisis. While it does not directly offset carbon emissions, the dollar-for-dollar impact can be just as significant.

That's all for this update! As always, thank you for your support.
